Cambodia Boarding Academy

MINISTRY: Cambodia Boarding Academy

LOCATION: Cambodia

TYPE OF MINISTRY: School

WHO IS BEING HELPED: The children of Cambodia

MISSIONARIES INVOLVED: Billy & Natalie Howell

Imagine having to choose between finishing high school and following Jesus.

Cambodia is 95% Buddhist; just under 3% are Christian. The country has a population of nearly 18 million and approximately 4,000 active Seventh-day Adventists.

Many of our young people in the Cambodian Adventist church do not have the option of attending an Adventist high school with a Christ-centered environment. In Cambodia’s public schools, they are taught communism and Buddhist beliefs. In many instances, they face Sabbath issues. We are partnering with the Cambodia Adventist mission to build a school that will give more young people from all over Cambodia the opportunity to see Christian principles at work daily.

The school will also provide an education that will equip them to impact their country positively. We are also working toward opening a primary school for local kids who need better education opportunities.

The Vision

Thirty acres of land have been purchased for the Cambodia Boarding Academy. While waiting for funds to build the school, the Howell family has been helping prepare the school's future teachers for their college education courses. Those young people will return to teach at the new school after training. Learn more about the teacher training project here.

The preparation of the property and the building of the school will be done entirely from scratch. Besides buildings, the school will need fencing for the property boundary, well construction and maintenance, and more.

The plan is to provide high school education; however, since education in the nearby elementary schools is poor, there has been some recent consideration of including an elementary/middle school as part of the project.

The entire school will be open to both Adventist and non-Adventist students with classes in the native Khmer language rather than English. This will enable the school to impact the local community more. Besides ministering to the students, the missionaries running the project plan to minister to the needs of the people around them. Showing the local community that they care will strengthen the villagers’ trust in them and help break down barriers that may arise.
