A Leap of Faith - Cambodia Youth Conference

As we shared in aprevious newsletter, a group of Cambodian Youth, inspired by their trip to PYC (Philippine Youth for Christ), decided to plan their own youth conference in Cambodia. This conference was set to be held the second weekend of November. When making these plans, one aspect we always take into consideration, but cannot gauge with complete certainty, is the future. This is something we are all reminded of from time to time.

Earlier this year, the leader of the Cambodian government’s main opposition, Sam Rainsey, announced his return from exile after four years. In response to potential unrest, the government bolstered security measures, and eventually a ban on large gatherings was imposed for a period of one week beginning at the same time as the conference. Despite our petitions to continue, we were denied permission to hold the meetings, and so the event was cancelled.

Nearly two weeks later, after Rainsey failed to make entry, things have returned to normal. We now have moved the conference to the latter part of December, from the 25th to the 29th. As we do this, we have had to bring back the speakers and find new ones to fill in for those who cannot make it back. As with all last minute arrangements, the costs of accommodations are higher, with travel expenses being a primary cause.

We faced a similar situation during this year’s PYC event in late May/early June, with a group of young delegates from Cambodia. Lacking funds (and, in some cases, passports), a call was put out for prayers and willing hearts to donate. Over the course of three weeks, everything was able to come together in order to send them. This was a testament to everyone as to what can be accomplished going forward in faith. Now we are attempting to do it once more.

For anyone reading this who feels the Spirit’s leading, we ask for your support. Donations will go toward the costs of travel, accommodations, and food for the speakers coming to the conference. The overall food budget for the event has not yet been met and we hope to bolster this as well. Also, in need of extra help, are the hopeful attendees who do not have the means to attend; for them, we also ask for support in the same areas.

Update: God provided from the Conference and it was held on December 25-29.
